The internet began as an alternative to real life: it meant a different way of interaction with humans \u2013 and a different way of experiencing the world. Today, computer algorithms promise a faster, more efficient set of tools with which to guide human life. But those tools rely on data \u2013 and that data comes with implicit history, imbalances, and bias. What are artificial intelligence algorithms, what is the current state of AI in the modern world, and how much does AI allow for agency amongst those who are subject to its vast (and expanding) decision-making powers. This talk\/workshop explores the label of \u201eawful AI\u201c and investigates why we may be constructing a computer-powered future where the algorithmic agency of huge segments of society has been optimised out. We will explore counter strategies and learn how activists design today (with technology and without) to create a more just world for tomorrow. What approaches are already in place? Which artists inspire us? Which values are important to us?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
